About the Programme
The Department of Health invites suitable, passionate, and dedicated applicants to apply for the 2025 Paramedic Learnership Programme within the Provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
This learnership provides an opportunity for South African youth to gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in Pre-Hospital Emergency Care, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. Training will be conducted by qualified Emergency Care Practitioners at accredited EMS training centres and operational bases.
Programme Objectives
The purpose of this programme is to develop competent, ethical, and service-driven paramedics capable of providing quality emergency medical care across South Africa.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a National Certificate in Emergency Care and may progress to further qualifications such as Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) or Emergency Care Technician (ECT).
Key Learning Areas
Learners will receive training and practical exposure in the following areas:
- Basic and Intermediate Life Support techniques
- Trauma and medical emergency management
- Emergency communication and incident reporting
- Patient transportation and ambulance operations
- Scene safety, triage, and effective teamwork
- Professional ethics and patient confidentiality
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens with a valid ID
- Have a Grade 12 certificate with English, Biology, and Physical Science (minimum Level 4)
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Be physically and medically fit for EMS duties
- Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
- Commit to completing the full duration of the learnership
Added Advantages
These will be beneficial but are not compulsory:
- Code 10 driver’s licence with PrDP
- First Aid Level 1–3 certification
- Volunteer or community health service experience
Duration and Structure of the Programme
The learnership runs for 12 to 24 months and includes:
- Classroom-based theoretical training at accredited EMS colleges
- Practical experiential learning at provincial EMS stations and healthcare facilities
All learners who complete the programme and meet the assessment requirements will be awarded a recognised qualification in emergency care.

- Proof of residence
- Medical fitness certificate (if available)

Additional Information
- Successful applicants will sign a learnership agreement and performance contract
- Learners will receive a monthly stipend
- Placement may occur in any district based on provincial operational needs
