WHAT IS SASSA?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administers social grants
to eligible South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees.
These include Child Support Grant, Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant,
and others.


APPLYING FOR A NEWBORN CHILD (CHILD SUPPORT GRANT)

You can apply for a Child Support Grant as soon as the child is registered
and has a birth certificate.

WHO SHOULD APPLY:

  • Parent or primary caregiver of the child
  • South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Child must be under 18 years old
  • Household must meet the means test

WHEN TO APPLY:

  • Apply as soon as you receive the birth certificate
  • Delays may result in loss of back pay

WHERE TO APPLY:

  • Visit a SASSA office in person
  • Online applications may be available, but newborn cases are often
    finalised faster in person due to document verification

NEW APPLICANTS (ALL GRANTS)

If you are applying for any SASSA grant for the first time:

GO IN PERSON IF:

  • You are applying for the first time
  • You need help understanding requirements
  • You do not have all documents
  • Your situation is complex

APPLY ONLINE IF:

  • You are familiar with the process
  • You have all required documents
  • You are reapplying or updating details

Always keep your receipt or reference number.


IF YOUR APPLICATION WAS REJECTED

If your SASSA application was rejected:

  • You have the right to APPEAL
  • Appeals must usually be submitted within the time period stated
    on your rejection notice
  • Rejection reasons may include:
  • Income above the threshold
  • Missing or incorrect documents
  • System verification issues

IMPORTANT:
Many rejections are overturned after appeal or reapplication
once documents are corrected.
