The purpose of the Sasol Apprenticeship Programme is to train and develop successful candidates to become qualified Millwrights. The training is conducted in line with the requirements of the relevant Sector Education and Training Authority and the National Artisan Moderation Board. The programme combines theoretical learning with practical on-the-job training, allowing apprentices to gain real-world experience in Sasol’s operational environments.

As an apprentice, you will gradually build the technical competence required in your discipline while learning how a large industrial operation functions. This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for long-term career growth within Sasol or in other engineering and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Apprentices will be required to demonstrate competence in pre-identified areas relevant to the specific plant, mine, equipment, or systems within their discipline. This includes understanding and correctly using plant maintenance documentation systems as well as planning and work management systems.

You will be expected to gain relevant plant or mine-specific process knowledge and apply this knowledge during daily maintenance and operational tasks. A strong focus is placed on safety, and apprentices must comply with all Safety Management Systems such as IMS and MBO. This includes understanding emergency procedures, conducting hazard identification, and completing task risk assessments.

Daily participation in morning meetings is required, where work assignments, priorities, and safety matters are discussed. Apprentices must support business goals by meeting deadlines and providing clear feedback to supervisors regarding work progress. Accurate feedback contributes to improved planning and operational efficiency.

The role also involves participating in root cause analyses and risk assessments in line with legal and company requirements. These activities are aimed at improving plant safety, reliability, and sustainability. Apprentices are expected to maintain high housekeeping standards and follow waste disposal procedures at all times.

Personal development is an important part of the programme. Apprentices will take part in quarterly performance appraisals with their group leader, identify training and development needs, and include these in a Personal Development Plan. Leadership skills are encouraged, and apprentices are expected to lead by example, contribute to team efforts, and assist with the development of work instructions to improve staff competency.

Where appropriate, apprentices may act as group leaders in line with their career path. They may also contribute to the overall maintenance strategy, conduct physical inspections to support plant sustainability, attend problem-solving discussions, and ensure that maintenance history is correctly captured to support future upgrades and renewals. Active participation in toolbox talks and safety discussions is essential to improving overall workplace safety.
