The National Treasury is seeking a highly motivated and analytical professional to join their team as an Economist in Socio-Economic Policy based in Pretoria. ▢ Role Purpose

The Economist: Socio-Economic Policy will conduct research on key economic trends, particularly unemployment, inequality, and poverty alleviation. Insights generated will inform policy advice, contribute to the economic framework for the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) and the annual budget, and support evidence-based decision-making at national level.


▢ Key Responsibilities

1. Economic Research and Policy Analysis

  • Conduct research on unemployment, inequality, and poverty alleviation to support policy formulation
  • Provide inputs into memoranda for the Minister and Director-General on recent economic developments
  • Compile independent research papers on relevant socio-economic issues

2. Commentary on Economic Data Releases

  • Maintain and update a comprehensive database of economic data for research purposes
  • Provide reports on developments in the South African economy, focusing on employment, equality, and poverty reduction
  • Deliver economic data in user-friendly formats to internal stakeholders across the National Treasury

▢ Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) plus a minimum National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Economics, Econometrics, Finance, Statistics, Business Science, Data Science, Accounting, or Mathematics
  • Postgraduate qualifications (NQF Level 7, 8, or 9) are an added advantage
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in policy analysis, academia, or economic consulting
  • Strong understanding of research methodology and experience in analyzing economic trends
  • Knowledge of South African economic trends, data sources, and statistical analysis
  • Basic report writing and analytical skills
