Job Description

The Child Minder position is designed to provide temporary care, protection and emotional support to children who become separated from their parents or guardians while visiting municipal beaches. Child Minders work closely with Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and other emergency personnel to ensure every child is protected until they can safely be reunited with their families.

The position requires individuals who are compassionate, patient and able to remain calm under pressure. Every child placed into the care of a Child Minder must receive proper supervision, emotional reassurance and appropriate care throughout the duration of their stay.

Besides supervising children during the day, some Child Minders may also be required to work at overnight facilities where children remain until their parents or guardians are located. These facilities operate around the clock and require dedicated employees who can maintain high standards of care, hygiene and safety.

Minimum Requirements

  • Appropriate level of primary education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report to the designated Law Enforcement Office at the beginning and end of every shift.
  • Report to the allocated beach or designated work area daily.
  • Provide care and supervision for lost or vulnerable children.
  • Ensure every child is kept safe until reunited with parents or guardians.
  • Maintain an accurate register of children received into care.
  • Record the names of guardians or persons collecting children.
  • Provide refreshments, blankets and emotional support where required.
  • Report any medical concerns immediately to Law Enforcement Officers.
  • Assist with identifying shortages of food, bedding or essential supplies.
  • Erect and dismantle shelters or tents used for childcare services.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area.
  • Prepare and cook meals for children staying at overnight facilities.
  • Ensure children have clean bedding and clothing.
  • Wash bedding and clothing where necessary.
  • Escort children safely to ablution facilities.
  • Provide a safe, caring and supportive environment at all times.
  • Work professionally with municipal officials and emergency services.
  • Protect confidential information relating to children and families.
  • Follow all municipal safety procedures.
