About the Position
eThekwini Municipality is looking for hardworking, reliable, and physically fit General Workers to assist with cleaning, housekeeping, waste management, and maintaining a safe working environment across municipal operational sites. This opportunity is ideal for unemployed South Africans seeking entry-level employment within the municipality.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 10 or equivalent qualification
South African ID
Good communication skills
Physically fit and able to perform manual duties
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and shifts when required
Previous general work or cleaning experience will be an added advantage
No criminal record
Key Responsibilities
Cleaning & Housekeeping
Perform routine and deep cleaning of workshops, offices, loading zones, operational areas, and ablution facilities.
Sweep, mop, wash, and maintain floors to ensure a clean working environment.
Remove leaves, dust, mud, waste, oil spills, and other debris from work areas.
Clean workshops, storage rooms, waste areas, equipment, and workstations.
Ensure all walkways and access routes remain clean and safe.
Maintain cleanliness around parking areas, fuel stations, storage yards, and wash bays.

Collect, separate, and dispose of waste according to municipal procedures.
Empty refuse bins and replace bin liners.
Transport waste to designated disposal and recycling areas.
Keep waste collection areas clean and free from overflow.
Assist with recycling and environmental cleanliness initiatives.
Safety and Compliance
Follow all Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
Report hazardous conditions immediately.
Clean spills promptly to prevent workplace accidents.
Place warning signs in areas being cleaned.
Store cleaning chemicals safely and use them according to safety guidelines.
Communication and Teamwork
Report daily to the Supervisor.
Work closely with maintenance teams and machine operators.
Report damaged equipment and shortages of cleaning materials.
Attend toolbox talks and daily safety briefings.
Assist colleagues when required.
Equipment Maintenance
Operate cleaning tools and equipment correctly.
Maintain cleaning equipment in good working condition.
Report faulty tools and equipment immediately.
Keep cleaning stores neat, organised, and secure.
Documentation
Complete daily cleaning checklists.
Record completed duties.
Report incidents, hazards, and accidents.
Assist during inspections and compliance audits.
